French and Bassari with English
Four Bassari students from Dakar revisit the land of their ancestors, deeply enclosed in the Savannah of eastern Senegal, 800 km from the capital. Through the animistic initiation rites of young Bassari boys, we discover a rich and complex millenary culture and a „naturally democratic“ society struggling to protect its ancient customs and simultaneously, to open up to the outer world. At the crossroads between the ethnic identity and the globalization, the tradition and the modernity, the animism and the Christianity, the destiny of this people, who call themselves „Sons of the Chameleon“, remains uncertain.
